Conversion among Muslims and Christians in Jos North and its Effects on Peaceful Coexistence

Abstract

The problem of forceful conversion from one religion to another has no doubt contributed to violence outbreak between Christians and Muslims in Jos. Some willing converts have suffered rejection from family members, thus casting dark spots on family relationships and peaceful coexistence. This study investigates conversion among Muslims and Christians in Jos North Local Government, and its effects on peaceful coexistence. The study employs descriptive survey design, and uses simple-random sampling technique to select its sample size. Questionnaire was used to collect primary data from respondents. A total number of 230 questionnaires were administered to respondents, and 200 were retrieved. Simple percentage was used to determine the frequency of occurrence of responses. The study reveals that, for some individuals, conversion from one religion to another has not really changed the coexisting relationship between converts and their family members, religion converted from and the general populace. Although, in many other cases, it affects the relationship between converts and their acquaintances. The study also shows that some conversion from one religion to another were on personal decisions, while others were due to external influence. The study underscores that religion plays an important role in shaping attitudes, thoughts, ideals and values of people. In view of the recurrent religious tensions between the two dominant religious groups in Jos North, the study concluded that there is a sustained culture of mutual suspicion and unhealthy rivalry between them, and this has also affected conversion from either Christianity to Islam or from Islam to Christianity.
