Reviewing INEC's Groundworks and the 2023 Election Outcome: The Experience of Oyo State

Abstract

The maintenance of democracy in any nation depends on the holding of credible, free, and fair elections. This study offered a thorough analysis of the groundwork made by the INEC for the general elections in 2023, with an emphasis on the election in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study analyses the numerous measures and methods implemented by INEC to promote a credible, transparent, and inclusive election process, drawing on a variety of primary and secondary sources. The study also included a critical analysis of the results of the elections in Oyo State in 2023, highlighting important trends, difficult issues, and noteworthy changes. Voter registration, the distribution of election materials, the behaviour of political parties, voter education and awareness campaigns, the function of security agencies, and the effectiveness of election monitoring mechanisms were only a few of the significant topics covered by the report. The experiences and viewpoints of major stakeholders are given particular consideration. The results showed both positive and constructive aspects of INEC's preparations for the elections in Oyo State in 2023. The use of technology for effective election logistics, improved voter registration procedures, and more public involvement in voter education programs were all positive achievements. However, difficulties like absentee voting, logistical snags, accusations of fraud, and security issues were also noted and debated. The study recommended that INEC should increase security measures, underlined the significance of timely election material delivery, ensure thorough training for election officials, and change voter registration procedure.
