Assessment of the contribution of Footwear and Leather training programme towards Skills acquisition

Abstract

Footwear and leather goods training is a proven means of participants. Government budgets are overstretched so much that it is becoming glaring that it is difficult to accommodate the teeming job seekers into the payroll. To cushion this effect, Government at both federal and state level have emphasized the need for youths to focus on education that leads to skill acquisition so that they can survive after graduation. However, the growing trend and concern about youth idleness occasioned by shortage of skills towards capacity development for self-employment, entrepreneurship and wealth creation have called to question the ability of research institute like Nigerian Institute of Science and Leather Technology to meet up with the mandate of providing skills to the youths who have participated in the programme. Thus, the main objective of this study is to determine the effect of footwear and leather training programme of Nigeria Institute of Science and Leather Technology on self-employment among the graduates of the programme. The study employed quantitative research design method to investigate the relationship between NILEST footwear and leather training programme and skills acquisition. The sample size of 428 was used to collect data. Findings from the study revealed that NILEST footwear and leather training programme has a positive significant effect on self-employment among the participants. The study recommends that given the impact of the footwear and leather training programme on self-employment, the government should open more of such training institutes across the country to provide training geared towards self-employment.
